Eagle 61 :: Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,

Further to my article about steam in Poland and Eastern Germany that appeared in the last issue of 'Eagle', the latest issue of 'World Steam', published in late May, reports that the Sroda-Zaniemysl narrow-gauge line was expected to close at the end of the winter timetable, i.e. Saturday 1st June. Apparently there has been a campaign to save it but the issue has already gone through the Polish courts and it is likely that nothing more could be done. The standard-gauge operation at Wolsztyn is expected to continue in the new timetable with little change.

In case any readers of 'Eagle' are interested, the address for 'World Steam' is:

World Steam (Subscriptions),
3 Shadwell Grove,
Radcliffe on Trent,
Nottingham,
NG12 2ET.

Subscriptions cost £17 per year for eight issues (£15 for existing subscribers who renew promptly). It announced a year or two ago that it was ceasing publication but it is now back in business. It relies on information sent in by readers; reports of overseas steam activity ('real' or preserved) can be sent to 'World Steam' (News) at the same address.

Above: Older members may remember the 'Thuxton' nameboard which used to be auctioned every year. Another standard corporate image nameboard from the station on the Wymondham to Dereham line, closed to passenger trains in 1969, is on display at the north Woolwich station museum, seen here on the 16th February 1994.
Left: Members who have ha the pleasure of attending meetings at which J.Brian Carter has been the speaker will instantly recognise that this photo is yet another example of his car playing a cameo role! The railway interest is given by the semaphore that still protects the up direction of the formaer level crossing at the Twentyfoot at the north end of Whitemoor yard. This is despite the GE&GN joint line having been lifted many years ago. The date is the 18th Spetember 1993.
